The Very Little Princess Zoey Story A Stepping Stone BookTM Marion Dane Bauer Elizabeth Sayles Books

Zoey is a feisty, endearing character with "too-curly hair." One day, her mother drops her off at Hazel's house. "Of course," says the narrator, "visiting your grandmother probably is natural for you. But it wasn't for Zoey." It turns out Zoey had never met her grandmother before that day. In the days following, Zoey learns a terrible truth about her little family.

In "The Very Little Princess," the storyteller's voice becomes a gentle wise woman that leads the reader through shifts in point of view, through complex plot points, and through emotional struggles. Another writer may struggle with this intricate process, but in the hands of master writer and storyteller Marion Dane Bauer, it's seamless. And magical. Just like the story.

While exploring her new bedroom, Zoey comes across a dollhouse, and a perfect china doll with alabaster skin named Princess Regina. And this doll turns out to be very special indeed! The grandmotherly storyteller punctuates the unfolding story with gentle wit and humor: "Having a doll come awake is a little like having a mouse run across your toes when you are sitting in the bathroom." The ensuing story becomes one of enduring friendship.

On one hand, this is a fantasy about a doll that comes to life, reflecting a Pinocchion journey from a self-absorbed perfect china doll with alabaster skin to a caring human being complete with freckles. But, and perhaps more importantly, this is a tale of friendship, love and loss. And family. Marion does not back away from the emotional truth behind mental illness and neglect. At its heart , this is a story of what it means to be human. Not perfect. But human. And what it means to be loved.

The Very Little Princess Zoey Story A Stepping Stone BookTM Marion Dane Bauer Elizabeth Sayles Books Reviews

This is a story that would be terrifying for most little girls. Zoey's mother drops her off at her grandmother's (who is a stranger). The grandmother and Zoey's mom starts to argue, so Zoey goes upstairs and plays with a little doll. At the end of the day, Zoey's mother departs, leaving her there, perhaps forever--we don't know and neither does Zoey. It is implied that Zoey's mother is mentally ill. Her mother tries to leave without saying goodbye--tries to sneak off! Zoey catches her as she is getting into the car. Zoey's mother pretends she had looked for her, and then says a very quick goodbye, saying simply, "I need to be by myself."

Be warned before you let your child read this book. It would scare lots of kids, or make them worry that their parents will do the same.
My daughter brought this book home from school. She is in second grade and loved how it was about a small Princess. I decided to read it and read it quickly in about an hour. I was horrified to find the little doll extremely selfish and rude. Then to find out her mother took her to visit her grandmother, a grandmother she never knew she had, only to leave her by telling her she "needed to be alone". The reast of the story unfolds that her mother had left her alone alot, but she sees her mom as wonderful. The girl is shocked to be left with a grandmother that she call witch Hazel. I could not believe that the school library has a book like this on their shelves. What 2nd or even 3rd grader understands depression. And this book looks like a fairy tale type book that any girl this age would love. It is very dark and horrifying. I told my daughter she could read it and then we would discuss it only because we are dealing with mental problems at home with my mother in law. I am going to read all of the books she comes home with now and I would not recommend this book for any young girl.
Don't say I didn't warn you.

The Very Little Princess. Sounds like a harmless book, right? Sweet. Fantasy. Cute pic. of a red-headed girl on the cover. Positive reviews on the back. HA!

My daughter and I were reading this seemingly harmless story (I thought it was a little odd that the mother and grandmother argued for the first nine chapters; but since Bauer never makes us privy to those conversations (Zoey hears the arguments but goes off w/ the doll), it seems harmless protecting children from adult issues. Harmless, yes, until chapter 10 when the mother just ups and abandons the child! Zoey begs her not to leave, but she just gets into the car and drives away. She leaves Zoey with a grandmother she never even knew existed (really!). So, there I was, sitting on the side of the tub, reading this to my bathing daughter (adopted from China, so you know the implications if you're an adoptive parent) and horrified. I couldn't criticize the mother for abandoning Zoey because she "had her own problems" (which we never learn about). I wanted to throw the book! Bauer leave readers with a shocked and grief-stricken child who finds a friend in a doll who is now human because it understands sadness. WHAT!
I can't really say that the book doesn't need a warning. I can't say the book would be traumatizing for some - and that is not to be belittled. But to others - it may seem like the author wrote just for them.
As a parent, you of course should read this before you share with your child. But if you withhold this book from your child only because it makes _you personally_ uncomfortable, then I don't have much good to say about you.

This is now and immediately my favorite book and (having just read copies from the local library) I just ordered this and its sequel for myself in hardcover. I'm technically middle-aged and have never had children...which is probably good because I'm mostly like Rose in the novel. But it was so many good tears that I had when in the novel Zoey and Princess Regina came to understand each other.

If you like princesses, but also like books such as those by Sylvia Cassedy (_Behind the Attic Wall_), or Joan Robinson's _When Marnie Was There_, or Penelope Farmer's _Charlotte Sometimes_, or even Rumer Godden's _Miss Happiness and Miss Flower_, then you are likely to enjoy this book. Thank you, Ms. Bauer!
I did not learn about the abandonment by Zoey's mother until after I had purchased the book for my grand daughter. I had seen the book at the library and was intriguedt by the title....
